PTSD: Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Treating Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) with Neurofeedback

The use of neurofeedback for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) was successfully pioneered with Vietnam vets.

In essence, PTSD is a body-mind condition in which the memory of a traumatic experience persists over time, continually re-triggering an emergency-level mental and physical response.

Because brain training reduces uncontrolled reactions, including fear, and increases the brain’s stability and calm, it allows the traumatized individual to separate the memory from the physical response.

Released from the body-mind pattern, the traumatic memory can then be evaluated for its historic importance rather than victimizing the individual again and again. The goal is not to cause the individual to forget, but rather to be able to remember without anxiety.

The benefit of neurofeedback for PTSD also extends to reducing the incidence of both day- and nighttime flashbacks.
