Expectations

What You Can Expect
Whichever form of counseling and coaching is best for you; there are a number of things you can anticipate.
You and your family members will be treated with respect, including respect for your human dignity and your personal values and beliefs, without regard to national origin, language, race, color, religion, ancestry, medical diagnosis, mental or physical disability, genetic information, educational background, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, economic status, or the source of payment for care. We will also honor your privacy, including the confidential treatment of all written and electronic records and the right to privacy during case discussion, consultation and treatment.
At our first meeting or conversation, I will focus on learning as much as possible about your concerns, your needs and the problems that are most urgent. I will ask questions and encourage you to provide as much detail as you can.
Each of our meetings will be a conversation. I will ask questions, make comments and offer suggestions.
The material we discuss during counseling/coaching sessions is private and will not be shared with anyone, with two exceptions:
1) if you specifically request that we discuss your care with another physician or a family member; and 2) as required by law in the case of a criminal investigation.
There may be homework! If you are interested in making the most of your experience, I will create customized material for you to work on between sessions. Much of what we do in counseling is about action and how we act in different situations. You may be asked to be especially aware of or to take certain actions between sessions.
What We Expect
We expect you to have an intention and a commitment to get something important out of your coaching and to participate fully to that end.
We expect you to show up on time for every scheduled appointment. If you must cancel an appointment for any reason, we expect you to cancel by telephone at least 48 hours in advance.
We expect you to treat everyone in our office, including our staff and your family members, with complete respect at all times.
We expect that you will do your best to be honest in describing feelings, concerns and events.
We urge you to ask questions if you do not understand information, terms, the specifics of your coaching or what is expected of you.
Our work together requires trust. You trust that I will contribute valuable insights, customize a program that is best for you and remain committed to the process; I trust that you will be honest with me and with yourself and that you will also remain committed to the process.
