Marriage Counseling Los Angeles

Imago Brent Wood

There are many different ways to approach the problems that arise in our lives. Psychology has come up with a wide array of techniques and has discovered a lot about how the human mind works in the decades since Freud and his contemporaries started trying to figure out the human mind. One front in which psychology has made a lot of headway is in relationship therapy. The connections and relationship between two people is a field of study all on its own in psychology and there have been many advances like a method of therapy that is referred to as 'imago'. Brentwood area psychologist, Dr. Fibus is one of the many who support this new approach.

Even though Dr Fibus uses the techniques and concepts of imago, Brentwood was not the origin. Dr. Harville Hendrix developed this form of marriage therapy as a way of helping couples to cope with their problems. Imago Relationship Therapy (IRT) integrates and extends standard western psychological practices, the behavioral sciences, and spiritual disciplines to help look into and solve love relationship problems. The theory is based on a communication between the people in the relationship but is based on some revolutionary and interesting premises.

According to IRT all people are born whole and complete but during childhood we are wounded, inadvertently, by our primary caretakers (usually our parents). From this early experience we have an image of all the positive and negative aspects of our caretakers that are rooted in our subconscious. Along with this image there is the 'imago' or the composite image of our caretakers. This imago can almost be said to be the blueprint of the person that we want to marry some day. According to the theory we want to marry this person as a part of a process of healing, as they are the only ones that can heal us. This is because they are the closest, according to their traits, to our caretakers or parents.

From this we get the main goal of imago. Brentwood psychologist, Dr. Fibus, helps to align the conscious mind with the goals of the unconscious. The conscious mind seeks happiness while the unconscious mind seeks healing and growth. By aligning the two, the therapy seeks to help clients form a committed relationship that is based on what is known as the Couple's Dialogue. The dialogue is usually done with the assistance of a therapist and is based on repeating each statement, summarizing each statement, validating each statement, and empathy. This allows each side of the relationship to understand and experience the feelings of the other side.

If you believe that you may find the help you need in imago, Brentwood psychologist Dr. Fibus may be able to help. Imago Relationship Therapy has already helped many other people get through the hard times in their relationships. The premise of the Couple's Dialogue is simple to understand and once it has been established can be used throughout the rest of your lives.
